Litter Training a Kitten

One of the first things you need to do when you get a kitten is to litter train him. Litter training a kitten is a whole lot easier than litter training a cat as it hasn't had the chance to get into bad habits.

When a kitten is tiny, it's handy to have a crate or cage where you can shut him up safely at night and when you're out of the house. Make sure that he has something soft to sleep on like an old towel or blanket as well as food, water and the all important litter tray. The cage is now his own little territory where he will feel safe and secure.

When I've raised tiny kittens, I've found that a seed tray is big enough initially to use as a litter tray and a seed tray doesn't take up too much space in the cage. You'll easily be able to tell when the kitten is growing out of it and needs a full sized litter tray.

Litter training a kitten is usually quite easy as cats are very clean creatures. When your kitten comes to stay, gently put him in the litter box straight away. He may not need to use it but it's amazing how he will immediately seem to know what it's for.

Continue to pop the kitten into the litter box at intervals throughout the day if he doesn't go to it of his own accord. If he does have a little accident in the wrong place, just pick him up and put him in the litter tray anyway, even if it's too late.

Feed your kitten regularly and after meals take him to the litter tray; he'll soon learn to do his business there.

In the last couple of years I've raised two kittens. The first one was only three weeks old and in her first few days with us, she did have a little wee in the wrong place a couple of times but the second one, who was five weeks old when we got him never had an accident at all and immediately took to his litter tray.

If you're raising a very tiny kitten which is still being bottle fed, you may need to encourage his first toilet. Take a piece of damp cloth or kitchen paper and gently massage his little bottom. He may just wee a small amount at first and his excrement will be a bit like the consistency of toothpaste. After the first occasion, he won't need any further encouragement.

Do make sure that the litter box is cleaned at least daily as a fastidious kitten won't use a dirty tray and will do his toilet elsewhere.

Litter training a kitten isn't hard but you need to be vigilant while he's tiny and confine him to a small space when you're out or at night so that he isn't tempted to ignore the litter tray.

Liz Canham has four cats, all of which she has raised from kittens. Liz's website, The Cat Lover, has more information on litter training a kitten and other aspects of cat care.

How: to wean bottle fed kitten

If you have bottle-feeding a baby kitten, you have, you need to wean. Weaning is the process of introduction of complementary feeding of kittens. If your cat has been introduced by his mother, and then the mother probably care cat weaning for you. However, if your cat was a rescue and was from, must then learn the correct manner a bottle fed to wean kittens.

This is a process that must be done gradually, over time and with much patience! The kittens will not be able to digest simple meal and food on their first try. They should not start a kitten weaning, until they are at least four weeks old. At this time their bodies have developed enough, so that they can tolerate solid food. If you try to do it four months ago, then your kitten can ill and can not always solid food to eat.

A really good way to tell whether your kittens can be disposed of is to ensure that their eyes are open and your House itself can navigate through them if necessary. If your eyes are open, this means that they are far enough in their development to begin to eat solid foods.

You want to first for shopping or find Bowl small enough a little, so that the cat can eat them, and you want of kitten food. It doesn't matter if the food is wet or dry. On the first day you mix a very little kitten food with milk replacements. This should be very watery. If your food was dry, you have to it mush, so that it's almost like a pudding consistency. The cat close and let them smell. She will probably start it round. Let their food, until it is full. In the first couple weeks of weaning you need this small meals with the bottle of milk to supplement, you already the kitten have fed. Kittens need much food, let go are not you hungry!

Keep with the process of interbreeding of food in with replacement milk. Add to eat a little more every day and a little less milk. You want to do this over a period of about four weeks. Then, your kitten should be removed completely!

Apply an ID tag on my kitten kitten care?

As soon as a kitten comes to your home, you can check, attach some form of identification label on your new pet. However, there are a few problems with this. First of all be the standard cat collar, that are required to attach a disk or capsule to carry almost certainly too big for a kitten. In addition, kitten grow very quickly, and each collar could quickly too tight around the neck. Another point is that kittens not really must not at home in the first phase of her life to hiking.

The cat grows so will his curiosity and it is they should be to explore the world beyond your front door. This is the time to consider fitting your kitten with Forms. Are there wide range of options when it comes to something on your cats collar. The most common is probably the engraved metal tag. These are from pet shops and engravers and, when your cat loses the tag (which sometimes is the case), or you will move the cat long life. Another popular option is to secure a small metal or plastic cylinder, where you insert and a piece of paper with the important information. Use one of the methods on paper written by information you need to ensure that the container of water will protect. Use also permanent ink, which is not likely to fade in the course of which is time.

The next question is, what information on the type plate. All it takes is either selling or the cats name and a phone number. If you write make sure the information easy to read, may be best, with capital letters, especially if your writing is not always easy to decipher.

Is an alternative to a collar and tag, your cat or cat with an ID chip have implanted. This is a simple process that your vet for you can do. Often owners have their cats micro at the same time, that the you are neutered, which ideally between 6 to 8 months are lined. The details of all micro remain lined with pets on a computer and one should be lined with animal, found that they quickly can be reunited with their owners. The main advantage of the micro-chip is, that if implanted the chip it is is for life there is no fear of cat lose their ID information.

. To sum up, no need for a kitten is characterized, during will it small and limited the House and supervised in your garden is. However, once it becomes a little more curious and brave you should seriously consider your kitten, what a collar and tag or you micro chipped.

Congratulations on the adoption of your new feline! And now...

... you may be wondering, 'what comes next?' What kind of care will your newest, and youngest, family member require?

In addition to all of the TLC that your kitten will receive from you at home, there will be many ways in which your veterinarian will contribute to the health and growth of your kitten during their first year of life. It is important to establish a healthy beginning, and your veterinarian will be essential in this process.

PHYSICAL EXAMS:

Your vet will give your kitten a full physical exam, which means that your kitten's heart and lungs will be listened to, their belly (and all abdominal organs) will be palpated, their temperature taken, skin and coat health assessed, and their teeth, eyes, and ears checked. Your vet will check if your kitten is indeed a male or female (gender confusion is not uncommon in small kittens... sometimes the first trip to the vet means that "Alex" becomes "Alexandra!"). If your kitten is male, your vet will determine whether his testes have descended yet. They will check for the presence of umbilical hernias and other common congenital abnormalities, and will look for ear mites and fleas. If any of these unwanted visitors are present, they will be promptly dealt with by your vet!

VACCINES:

There are three types of vaccinations that kittens receive, and they are administered in a series of boosters, typically at 4 week intervals. FVRCP, FeLV, and rabies are the three vaccines types with which kittens are immunized. FVRCP stands for Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, and Panleukopenia. Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis is caused by the Feline Herpes Virus -1, and causes upper respiratory and eye infections which can range from mild to severe. Calicivirus is also an upper respiratory virus that can cause both 'colds' and eye infections, but which can have a greater severity of clinical disease, including sudden death in certain highly virulent (pathogenic) strains. Panleukopenia is also a very serious virus. It causes severe bone marrow suppression, intestinal disease, and commonly death. All three viruses in the FVRCP vaccine are extremely contagious. FeLV stands for Feline Leukemia Virus, which will be described briefly below.

On your kitten's first visit (8 weeks old), the first of three FVRCP vaccines will be administered, as well as the first of two FeLV vaccines.

On their second visit (12 weeks old) your kitten will receive an FVRCP booster and the second (and last) FeLV booster.

On their third visit (16 weeks old) your kitten will receive their third (and final) FVRCP booster as well as a rabies vaccine (which does not require additional boosters). This last set of vaccines never occurs earlier than 16 weeks of age, because otherwise there are still maternal antibodies present (viral immunity that was transferred through nursing) which interfere with your kitten's own antibody immune production.

DEWORMING & OTHER CREEPY CRAWLIES:

Your kitten will also be sent home with a broad spectrum deworming medication that is typically administered either orally or topically several times at anywhere from two to four week intervals depending on what type of dewormer your vet has dispensed. Your vet may also instruct you to collect a fresh fecal sample which you can bring to your kitten's next appointment; it will be checked for the presence of parasitic protozoan organisms which the deworming medication does not treat. If your kitten's fecal sample is positive for any of these other parasites, your vet will prescribe medication(s) to treat their infection(s).

VIRAL TESTING:

On the second or third visit, your veterinarian will likely recommend laboratory blood work tests for your kitten. Blood work is done for two reasons. One reason is to check your kitten's viral status (positive or negative) for Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). FeLV and FIV are retroviruses that spread between kitties, and are the most common causes of infectious deaths among domestic cats. Assessment of your kitten's viral status is particularly important if you have other cats within the household as well.

Kittens can test negative for FeLV and FIV during the incubation phase of infection, so if your kitten was tested at a young age, your veterinarian may recommend testing a second time several months later to ascertain your kitten's negative status.

PRE-ANESTHETIC BLOOD TESTING:

The second reason for which blood work is performed in your kitten's first year of life is to prepare for the general anesthetic that will be needed for your kitten to be spayed or neutered before they reach 6 months of age. A general blood work panel helps to assess the health of the kidneys, liver, and bone marrow so that your veterinarian knows in advance of any abnormal anesthetic and surgical risks your kitten may be affected by.

Spaying and neutering should typically be done between 4 and 6 months of age. This helps lessen the occurrence of certain types of cancers, lessens wandering behaviour, aggression, and also prevents reproductive activity, which is very important due to the high population of feral cats as well as the many unwanted shelter kitties in North America.

When you kitten is under general anesthetic for surgery, it is an opportune time to also give them a microchip. A microchip is a fail-proof form of identification, unlike tattoos which can be blurred over time and are only useful locally, and unlike collars and tags that can come off or become outdated. Microchips are implanted just underneath the skin between the shoulder blades, and then can be read using a scanner. If your kitten ever gets outside accidentally and becomes lost, any veterinary clinic or animal shelter will be able to identify your kitten via the microchip code.

All of this may seem like a crazy jumble of medical terms and concerns, but just keep in mind that you'll need to take your kitty to the vet four times in their first year. Three times for vaccinations, physical checks and bloodwork and once for spaying or neutering.

That is the end of your kitten's first set of health visits to the veterinarian!

At 1 year of age, your cat will be due for a health exam and their 1 year FVRCP and rabies boosters. If you have any questions or concerns before the 1 year milestone, you should not hesitate to contact your veterinarian.

Their new kitten

Is the first step to have a good pet cat select a healthy kitten. Visit a litter kittens about two weeks before they are ready to leave her mother. They are six weeks old. To ask permission to pick up the kitten and be very gentle when to do so. Make sure that a kitten shiny, full coat has crisp, bright eyes and a. Check the skin under the coat for problems such as wounds, rashes, or bare bodies. You want a kitten to choose has the healthy skin.

Next, make sure that the cat is either too thin or too thick. A kitten that is either all skin and bones, or has a an infection is expected to have a bloated belly. Select not a kitten. Check also the kitten nose and ears for all characters of the discharge or infection. While you check for signs of physical health, you will notice the cat temperament. The cat lead to another part of the room and watch behavior. It is nervous or scared? It reacts gently Petting on the cultivation of a quiet? You want a kitten that quickly adapts to you. This is a sign that they who was treated by the owners of the litter, the preparation of kitten life with people is important.

It is extremely important, starting with a friendly cat. A scratch, hiss, or terribly frightened, kittens will grow up to, at best a cat be difficult. In the worst case loving will be the cat never friendly, a pet. After you have selected a kitten, you, you take steps to remove it, if it is ready, his mother left (if it is about eight weeks old). One or two days your new kitten take it to a veterinarian after you get (an animal doctor). The veterinarian is there widespread diseases give the first in a series of recordings protection before cat. Tell the vet if you are planning, let the cat in the open air. If you intend to let it out a shot of protection against rabies have the cat.

The veterinarian will assess also the kitten for signs of any disease. Bring to delete sample of the kittens, so the doctor for worms can check.

If veterinarian is the medicine for the cat, make sure that you or your parents give medicine considers. Ask the veterinarian or the veterinarian Assistant, showing proper method. Give the medicine, the kittens just like by the veterinarian. Twice a day is not good enough when the kitten should receive medicine three times a day. About four times per day eat kittens like to every few hours. At each meal, fresh milk in addition to a small bowl with dry cat food serve a saucer. Mix for one or two meals in canned food (meat or fish). If the kitten is diarrhea, go to the milk powder. If the diarrhea continues to reduce you the quantity of milk and the number of meals, in which it is served.

Kittens treated love occasional, fresh liver, kidney or cottage. But dry cat food is what a steady diet the best. Keep spoiled with once or twice a week. If the cat grows older, you can gradually reduce the number of meals. Six months two meals a day are sufficient. One year a meal is all that what is required on the day. If your cat for a second meal annoys, specify a little more than half of the part of a meal twice a day. The size of the parts is recommended on the cat-food box.

For your new kitten, and later your adult cat, keep a bowl filled with fresh water of ever.

Although for themselves will decide your kitten, where she will sleep there could enjoy a soft, comfortable on the ground, that you are preparing for them. A fluffy, clean towel folded and placed in a shoebox that sits on his side could make an attractive bed for your kitten. But the cat may just decide to bass on a Chair instead. You need to help get your kitten to use a litter box to go to the bathroom. Getting your cat used to a litter box is usually simple, and like to as cats are naturally clean their droppings to buried. A litter box is nothing more than a flat rectangular container. To use the simplest way, consists of soft plastic. In this casting you cat litter, which is sold in stores. Cover the bottom in the litter with about two inches of cat litter.

Take your kitten to their litter box, how soon you bring it home. Sometimes this is first visit everything is necessary. But until you are sure that the cat is, they take there after each feeding. Sometimes cats will not use a litter tray, if something about the particular brand is litter not to their liking. Occasionally, they will avoid the field if the situation is not enough private. Try to solve these problems using the kittens not the litter box from the start.

About the only unpleasant task have a cat litter box is involved in all two or three days cleaning. If you do not clean it, the field will start to smell. Empty all used litter in a paper or plastic bag and take it out on the garbage. Then wash the litter box with SOAP and water. Set newly filled field again in the same place so that you do not disturb the routine of your cat.

If you are planning, so that your cat go go to external, can decide it to bathroom outdoors. In this case, they offer no litter box. Instead, take your new kitten outdoors, a place where there is can a patch of dirt in the dig and burry. After a few days is the cat through the door let out will wait. Some people install even small cat doors, so their pets can come and go as they like.

One in the free cat should wear a collar with an ID tag on it. This day should give that cat names as well as your name and address. Now that you know how your kitten feel welcome in their new home to do, is to learn time for you and your cat know each other.

Congratulations on the furry new addition to your family!

Here is a list of essential items that you need to get started with your kitten:

Kitten Food

Grain & soy free canned kitten food and grain free dry kitten food.

Feed your kitten 95% canned food, and complement it with a tiny amount of dry kitten food on a daily basis to give your kitten something to exercise their jaws on (depending on its age) since they will be teething over the next several months.

NOTE: You do not need to be concerned with rationing your kitten's calories for quite some time... your kitten can essentially eat as much food as they like because they will be developing muscle and bone tissue, and will need a lot of calories to do so! So, let your little feline enjoy as much canned food as they wish to consume! It is quite rare for a young kitten to become obese; your veterinarian will advise you about calorie rationing when your cat is approximately 1 year old.

Food & Water Dishes

Although many pet store kitten starter kits include plastic food and water dishes along with a litter box and scoop, avoid purchasing these! It is healthier for your kitty to eat and drink from glass, ceramic, or steel dishes, rather than from carcinogenic plastic dishes - just as it is for us as well! Additionally, most cats have a notable preference for glass, ceramic, or steel dishes over plastic ones, because they do not leech undesirable stale tastes into their water and food. This is because glass, ceramic, and steel dishes are far more easily cleaned and sterilized since, unlike plastic, they are not porous materials: more convenient for you and tastier for your kitty! Many cats who eat and drink from plastic food and water dishes suffer from feline chin acne as a result of chronic daily contact with them. This common skin reaction to plastic is yet another good reason that plastic dishes best avoided!

Your kitten should have easy access to food and water, so if you have a multiple level home, food and water should be available for your kitten on each level

Remember to clean and refresh your kitten's water supply on a daily basis! - Don't let water become old and stale, and definitely do not let water dishes go dry!

Litter Box

A great perk of adopting a kitten is that there is typically no 'house-training' period whatsoever! It is instinctual for cats to seek out a dirt-like substrate in which they can dig, do their 'business' in, and then bury the evidence! The only tasks required of you are:
showing your kitten where the litter box is located, ensuring the litter box set-up is appropriatemaintaining its cleanliness!

A good litter box is open (not enclosed), shallow-sided, large & roomy, is easily accessible (ie. not hidden away in the basement), and not located in a high traffic or noisy location (eg. next to the washer and dryer)

Like the food and water dishes, litter boxes should be available on all floors in the home, and they should NOT be located by the food and water dishes (we don't really like to eat and drink in the washroom, and neither do our kitties! They are particularly hygiene-conscious creatures and those two types of activities do not mix any better for kitties than they do for us!)

Litter

Clumping litter is preferable because it facilitates cleaning the litter box on a daily basis without the build-up of ammonia from urine, and it also enables you to track the volume and frequency with which your kitten urinates • Unscented and non-dusty litter is best, and it should be kept several inches deep to provide a nice comfortable substrate for your kitten.

Scoop daily, top up the litter weekly, and empty & clean the box monthly Litter Trapping Mat • Small plastic, rubber, or fabric litter mats help catch litter bits that are tracked outside the box by your kitty coming and going, as well as litter that gets kicked out of the box as a result of your kitten's digging and burying actions. Litter mats are most useful when placed directly beside the entrance/exit of litter boxes where the highest volume of litter is tracked.

You can buy litter mats in pet stores or get crafty and make your own!

My favorite type of mat are those made of rubber; they're extremely effective at trapping litter, and are soft and comfortable on kitty's paws (which many other litter mats, such as ridged plastic mats are not)! Try Petmate Litter Catcher Mats, and also keep a handheld broom & dust pan handy for those stray litter particles.

Nail Clippers

Trimming your kitten's claws from a young age is a good idea because they become accustomed to having their paws handled, and in addition, kitten nails feel like little needles when they grow long! Ouch!

Small-sized pet nail clippers work well, but human nail clippers also work if you already have a pair. Give lots of praise and treats while trimming your kitten's nails, and be careful not to cut into the pink part of the claw (that's the equivalent of cutting into the pink part of your own nail!)!! Scratching post

Grooming claws and stretching their digital tendons and muscles are instinctive feline behaviors which start at a young age... so it is best to be prepared and have scratching posts in place when you bring your kitten home, rather than getting started on the wrong 'paw' (eg. your kitten using your favorite arm chair for scratching)!

Not all cats enjoy the same types of scratching posts, so if your kitten does not use the first one you try, do not be shocked... try rubbing catnip on it, try posts with different inclines (horizontal, oblique, vertical), different materials (sisal rope, carpet, cardboard), and make sure they are steady posts with wide, firm bases that will not topple over or move around while being used by your kitten.

Toys

If you plan on feeding your kitty a small amount of dry food each day, it is best to have your kitten 'hunt' it by using a kibble/treat dispensing ball - these are fun, mentally stimulating, and your kitty will be impossibly cute when playing with them.

Some examples are 'SlimCat MultiVet' balls, and 'Play N' Treat' balls - these allow your kitten to exercise both body and mind because they must manipulate the balls in order to get the kibble pieces to fall out... cats are natural predators and food that is available in a bowl is just plain boring!

Cats enjoy toy mice, catnip, cat-grass, laser pointers and many other forms of entertainment. Because cats become quickly bored of their toys though, it is best to have a rotating schedule of what toys are available to them - ie. keep toys hidden in a closet and pull out four different ones each week, so that they are 'new' again.
